The ATO Incident: 40 Years Later
Forty years ago, the Daily Pennsylvanian reported the shocking story that a student had allegedly been gang-raped at a Penn fraternity. What followed was a years-long saga that divided the student body and pitted fraternity alumni against the Penn administration, as the campus came to grips with the then-novel concept of whether an intoxicated partygoer could ever consent to brutal sex. The so-called ATO incident was a landmark in Penn history. It has been the subject of books and academic studies. It was related in a mesmerizing and transformative piece of journalism by the Philadelphia Inquirer's Mark Bowden that continues to be read and collected today.
Now, 40 years later, some of the leading figures on the campus drama -- including Bowden (the best-selling author of "Black Hawk Down" and many other acclaimed works), then-Penn Women's Center Director Carol Tracy, then-DP editor Peter Canellos (C '84) and then-DP reporter Mary Ellen Crowley Huesken (C '86) -- will come together to discuss the tragic story that raised national awareness of the rape threat on campuses, and redefined gender relations and student journalism at Penn.
